Wizards News: Washington signs Paul Pierce

By on 1:41 PM

After losing Trevor Ariza to the Houston Rockets, the Washington Wizards did not hesitate to move on. According to reports, the Wizards have agreed to a two-year, $11 million deal with veteran forward Paul Pierce.

Pierce spent 15 seasons with the Boston Celtics before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets, where he averaged 13.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game last season. The 10-time All-Star has stated he is very excited to team up with the young backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal in Washington.

The Wizards had one of their most successful seasons in a long time, making the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2005. Washington began their offseason by locking in big man Marcin Gortat to a five-year, $60 million deal, and had shown significant interest in bringing back Trevor Ariza, a move that would have kept the core that took them deep into the playoffs in tact.

However, by letting Ariza go to Houston and signing Pierce, the Wizards are able to maintain their flexibility going forward. Pierce's contract expires in the summer of 2016, when Kevin Durant is set to become a free agent. Durant is from the D.C. area and, who knows, maybe he will get the itch to come home like fellow superstar LeBron James did. By not signing Ariza to a long-term deal, Washington keeps this option a possibility.
