Rangers Rumors: Geovany Soto to be activated on Friday?

By on 1:13 AM

One of the few bright spots for the Texas Rangers this season has been their catching duo of Robinson Chirinos and most recently, Chris Gimenez. The latter especially has been instrumental in catching mercurial ace Yu Darvish. However, at the beginning of the season, Geovany Soto was supposed to be that starter after becoming Darvish's primary catcher at the end of last season. Until he tore the meniscus in his left knee during spring training.

According to Lone Star Ball by way of Rangers beat writers on Twitter, Soto is due to be activated this Friday from the disabled list. The Rangers conveniently have a 25 man roster opening with the trade of Jason Frasor and only need to make a move with the 40 man to make room for Soto. That should also be easy as the Rangers have three players on the 15 day DL that are not expected back anytime soon and can be moved to the 60 day DL.

Sources say that GM Jon Daniels indicated that Soto will split time behind the plate primarily with Chirinos, leaving Gimenez to be a bench bat, third catcher and occasional first baseman.
