Giants Rumors: San Francisco not discussing extension with Pablo Sandoval

By on 1:13 PM

Contract talks with San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval were tabled back at the end of April due to concerns over Sandoval's slow start as well as the amount reportedly sought by him and his agent. The amount reported was at least 100 million over five years. The argument from Sandoval's camp cites the third baseman's All-Star numbers during the majority of his career with the Giants.

Since then the Giants have not resumed talks with Sandoval. SBN's Chris Cotillo reports that the Giants are standing pat on the extension talks even as the All-Star break approaches.

One of the problems for the Giants in not resigning Sandoval is that he is likely to get more than he is worth anyway on an upcoming free agent market that is likely to be low on hitters. Giants GM Brian Sabean made his position clear in April, that Sandoval's number was too high for the team to meet. However, observers should keep in in mind that Sabean has a record of getting big contracts done at the last minute. One need only to look at Hunter Pence and Tim Lincecum's contracts last year.

Pablo Sandoval has nine home runs on the year, 34 RBIs and is batting .267 as of June 29th.
