Earlier today, I wrote for Sports Rumor Alert that the St. Louis Cardinals, who are in need of a catcher, were interested in trading for Minnesota Twins' Kurt Suzuki. The Cardinals appear to be moving in a different direction, however.
The Cardinals are working on a deal with recently released catcher A.J. Pierzynski, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Pierzynski, 37, was recently designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox and eventually released. In his time with the Red Sox, he struggled and wasn't well liked by players, according to baseball reporter Jen Royle, who is well connected with the team.
To make room for Pierzynski, the Cardinals would likely end up parting ways with George Kottaras, who packed his gear and was leaving the team, Goold reports. The exact transaction is unknown, but it's fair to speculate that Pierzynski is close to signing.
In 72 games with the Red Sox this season, Pierzynski hit four home runs and 31 RBI.
