The Dallas Cowboys defense was historically bad in 2013 and it actually has the potential to be worse in 2014. The Cowboys will now be without their two best defensive players from last season. DeMarcus Ware is a member of the Denver Broncos now and poor Sean Lee cannot stay healthy.
It has been confirmed that Lee is out for the 2014 season with a torn left ACL. When healthy Lee is one of the best young linebackers this league has to offer. Lee has missed 15 of the last 32 games for the Cowboys and will now miss the next 16 games at least. It probably would have been wise for the ‘Boys to address the inside linebacker position during the off season sometime before the seventh round of the draft where they selected Texas Tech’s Will Smith.
In rounds, two and four the Cowboys also selected linebackers Demarcus Lawrence (
Boise State) and Anthony Hitchens ( Iowa) respectively. Hitchens looks to be the
next man up in the Cowboys rotation and he has some decent size shoes to fill. Defensive
coordinator Monte Kiffin is putting a lot of faith in a rookie to possibly be
the quarterback of his defense. The Cowboys will also give DeVonte Holloman and
Justin Durant a look as well.
Reality is that defense which let up the third most yards in NFL history can stay the same or get better; it would be hard to regress. This is a wait and see approach by Jerry Jones that may or may not pay off. His franchise quarterback Tony Romo has a championship window that is closing by the snap and time is running out in Jerry’s world.
The Cowboys are bypassing on veterans Pat Angerer, LondonFletcher and Larry Foote and with the exception of Angerer Fletcher and Foote seem like dinosaurs at this stage of their careers. Although Fletcher wouldn’t be a bad option, a man who is about as durable as they get and knows the division well. Look for the Cowboys to make a move on adding someone the moment any of the replacements seem like they’re in over their heads. Cowboy nation can’t stand another season of mediocrity and they could be the case if the defense does not carry its weight this season.
