Yankees Rumors: New York 'best bet' to sign Joel Hanrahan

By on 9:00 AM

Late-inning reliever Joel Hanrahan is preparing to show teams what he has following Tommy John surgery. The right-hander will showcase his talents for interested teams on Thursday in Tampa, and Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe believes Hanrahan could be a "big pickup" for teams in need of bullpen help early on. Cafardo's best bet regarding a landing spot for Hanrahan? The New York Yankees.

The Yankees knew they would be without legendary closer Mariano Rivera entering the season, but the team unexpectedly lost their ninth-inning replacement, David Robertson, to a groin injury. At this point, New York is relying on a late-inning combination of Matt Thornton and Shawn Kelley.

Hanrahan made nine appearances last season before requiring surgery on his flexor tendon. He was expected to be able to pitch early on in spring training, but he's now finally putting a time together to audition for potential suitors.

Among the teams that have been tied to Hanrahan thus far are the New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays.
