Twins news: Sam Fuld claimed off waivers from Oakland

By on 2:33 PM

The Minnesota Twins claimed Sam Fuld off waives after the outfielder was designated for assignment with the Oakland Athletics. Fuld has played 7 games so far this spring and hasn't been as productive as the A's had hoped for. To make room for Fuld, the Twins then designated outfielder Darin Mastroianni for assignment with the Rochester Red Wings.

Fuld, a career .233 hitter, lacks power (7 HR in 743 at-bats) but makes up for that with his speed and defensive prowess. He has a .988 fielding percentage in the outfield between his time with the Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, and the Oakland Athletics. The Twins are a small ball type of club who rotate their starters frequently. There is a good chance he'll see a lot of playing time and possibly fit his way into the starting lineup.

The Twins are looking to escape the cellar of the American League Central and have made several moves in order to help their cause. With the additions of top free agents Ricky Nolasco, Phil Hughes, and the recent acquisition of Sam Fuld, they may be able to achieve their goal.
