With word that shortstop Jose Iglesias may miss most of the year, the Detroit Tigers are actively searching for a replacement for him. The top free agent shortstop available is Stephen Drew and he appears to be a prime target for Detroit.
Tony Paul of DetroitNews.com reports that Drew "could be a Tiger soon."
Any deal for Drew would cause a team to part with a draft pick. The Tigers are in a situation to win now, so parting with a first round draft pick makes a lot of sense.
If a deal goes down, it would provide an upgrade in their lineup. Iglesias is known for his stellar defense, but is not much of a hitter. Drew is a much better hitter, but will be a downgrade on the defensive side.
It wouldn't surprise me to see a deal get done by early next week. It makes too much sense and would benefit both sides.
In 124 games last season with the Boston Red Sox, Drew hit .253 with 13 home runs and 67 RBI's.
