Saints to release Darren Sproles

By on 6:36 PM

The New Orleans Saints are going to have a new look offense next season. They have already cut wide receiver Lance Moore today and weren't done. This time they cut a key member of their running back rotation.

The Saints are releasing 30-year-old running back Darren Sproles, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The move saves $3.5 million worth of cap space.

Even after releasing Sproles, the Saints could still cut Pierre Thomas. Expect Khiry Robinson to be the Saints' feature back in 2014.

On the open market, Sproles will likely garner a lot of interest. Even though he is 30, he has never been the featured back anywhere. He should have a decent amount of tread left on the tires. He could draw interest from teams such as the Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots.

In 15 games last season, Sproles had 53 carries for 220 yards and two touchdowns. In the receiving game, he caught 71 passes for 604 yards and two touchdowns.
