Rockies Rumors: Rafael Betancourt working out with team

By on 8:45 AM

Free Agent Rafael Betancourt will spend 10-days working out with the Colorado Rockies in hope of continuing his comeback attempt.  The former closer is recovering from elbow ligament surgery.  Rafael was quoted:
"I want to pitch this season. My goal hasn't changed," Betancourt, 38, told The Post on Tuesday. "I don't want to rush anything or have any setbacks. But everything has been positive so far."

He likely wouldn't be ready to pitch until August but the Rockies are hopeful of bringing him along slowly so that he could eventually re-join the team.  The Rockies don't have a typical closer in camp right now.  LaTroy Hawkins looks to be the likely closer but at 41 years old, you have to wonder how much gas is left in the tank.  Another option is Rex Brothers, who closed for the Rockies last season but he has an issue with walks, averaging 4.8 per nine innings.

This is a no lose situation for the Rockies. If he progresses to the point where he can return, that's fantastic.  If he doesn't progress the way they like, at least they tried & hopefully he can help the closers who fill in.
