Pirates Rumors: Extension Offer to Starling Marte revealed

By on 2:45 PM

The Pittsburgh Pirates have a history of locking up young outfielders & as we reported recently, they tried to do just that with Starling Marte this past winter.  Marte would have joined an outfield of locked up players that includes Andrew McCutchen & Jose Tabata.  Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports:
"The Pirates made at least one offer of a six-year extension to promising young outfielder Starling Marte, which would have guaranteed him seven years in Pittsburgh, sources say."

Marte & the Pirates will likely continue talking as there doesn't seem to be any discourse over the offer.  Unlike the Tigers situation with Max Scherzer, the Pirates haven't given up.  According to Heyman, the Pirates goal is to lock him up for his arbitration years plus his first two free agent seasons.  A couple years ago they gave McCutchen a 6-year, $51.5 million deal.  They're likely looking to do something similar with Marte.

Marte had a great season in 2013.  He hit .280 at the top of the lineup, knocked out twelve home runs & stole forty-one bases.  His ten triples led the team.  He's part of the future in Pittsburgh.  All that's left to decide is whether he thinks that too.  Stay tuned to Sports Rumor Alert for future updates.
