Hurricanes Rumors: Is Faulk signing Rutherford's last move as GM

By on 7:33 AM

In what is likely to be the final move made by Carolina Hurricanes general manger Jim Rutherford, the Caines have resigned restricted free agent Justin Faulk to a six year $29mil contract extension.

Faulk, who was the 37th overall pick in the 2010 draft, blossomed this year into one of the leagues better young defensemen, and was named to the U.S. Olympic team. The Hurricanes have had a disappointing season, and a retool is in the offing. According to Rutherford, Faulk will be an "anchor on defense for years to come."

Jim Rutherford, the only general manager the Hurricanes have had during their time in Carolina, is expected to move upstairs at the end of this season, and turn over the reigns of the roster to former Caines player Ron Francis, who it is expected, will be named general manager at the end of this season.

Francis has been working within the Hurricanes organization since his retirement as a player, and he will be given the task of retooling the club. One of the first major decisions he will have to make will be the future of head coach Kirk Muller, who it is expected, will be replaced. New general managers like to bring in their own guy, to hold the head coaching position.

The overhaul of the Hurricanes roster, could include moving veteran players out, in favour of a youth movement, since a new general manager gets a honeymoon period, and as such a total rebuild is an option, should Francis opt to take that route. In that vein, could captain Eric Stall be looking at a new home? The answer to that question rests with how severe Francis wants to go in trying to get the Caines back into the playoffs, and what kind of time frame ownership gives him to get that done.
