As he nears the end of his fifteenth season in the National Hockey League, Kimmo Timonen of the Philadelphia Flyers finds himself pondering what comes next, and retirement could well be in the offing.

The one big thing missing from the resume' of one of the games better defensemen, is a Stanley Cup, and if the Flyers could somehow manage to capture the holy grail of hockey, this season, Timonen's choice as to his future would be an easy one. The odds of the Flyers winning the Stanley Cup this season, are not favorable.

Timonen is a four time all-star, who will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2013-2014 season, and at age 38, would still be much sought after, by a great many teams, should he come onto the open market. The chances of Timonen moving to another club would not be high, as he would likely opt to stay in Philadelphia, providing of course that the Flyers want to retain him, given that he currently carries a cap hit of $6mil, and the Flyers would love to have that money available to upgrade their overall defense corp.

For now the future of Kimmo Timonen is fully in his own hands, but should he decide to return for another year, the options of where he will play, will first rest with Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren, and how much of his budget, he would be willing to offer Timonen on a one year deal.
